Abstract

Toxoplasmosis is a global zoonotic disease, that is mainly asymptomatic in healthy persons, but critical and life-threatening in immunocompromised patients. The infection is caused by an opportunistic obligate intracellular parasite protozoon “Toxoplasma gondii” (T. gondii) that can cause fatal complications in immunosuppressed patients. Cancer patients are being immunocompromised from the cancer itself and the cancer therapy they receive may reactive to a latent T. gondii infection that leaves them at high risk. The combined effect of Toxoplasmosis and cancer on the levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) (important inflammatory cytokines) is complex and varies depending on many factors emphasizing the need for further study in this area. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii in cancer patients and detect levels of IL-6, IL-10 in those patients to evaluate the differences in cytokines levels and to investigate how toxoplasmosis affects the immune response. 150 blood samples were collected from oncology patients having different types of cancer and receiving chemotherapy, from different ages. And 30 samples from healthy people for control. Samples were collected from the first of October 2023 to the end of March 2024, at Kirkuk oncology and hematology center. The method used was Sandwich-ELISA for detecting levels of Anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgM, IgG, along with IL-6, IL-10 and the results were analyzed statistically. the overall anti-T gondii IgG and IgM seropositive samples were found to be 67 (37.2%) in the study population. Levels of IL-6 and IL-10 were elevated in cancer patients infected with T.gondii. A high seroprevalence rate of T.gondii was detected among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. A significant elevation in levels of IL-6 and IL-10 was detected in cancer patients associated with infection with T.gondi.
